Despite status as a getaway haven, there’s no shortage of shopping bustle on Long Island -- big on malls, outlet centers, and main street boutiques. On the north shore, St. James General Store -- a national landmark built in 1857 and the nation’s oldest continuously operating general store -– keeps doors open year around with 19th century-style merchandise and handicrafts. Stony Brook Village Center, also on the north shore, provides Main Street shopping with nearly 50 specialty shops including Ann Taylor Loft and April on the Green. Freeport Nautical Mile, on the waterfront near Jones Beach, boasts shops for souvenirs along with clam bars and other eateries.

Malls and outlets include Suffolk County’s Hall of Heroes, with sports gifts and hand-signed collectibles; Tanger Outlet Center, Long Island’s largest factory outlet with more than 165 stores; Bellport Outlet Center, with more than 50 stores; Broadway Mall, with Stern’s, IKEA, Nobody Beats the Wiz, and other shops; Smith Haven Mall, with 150 stores including Macy’s and Sears; Americana Manhasset boasting some 40 oooh-la-la designer shops like Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Hermes, Gucci and Prada; The Walt Whitman Mall, with more than 100 stores including Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Eddie Bauer, and Banana Republic.

On the south shore are Discount Outlets Carl Place, with personal products to household goods; Green Acres Mall, with Macy’s, JCPenney, Sears and more than 200 specialty shops; Roosevelt Field, with some 215 stores including Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, JCPenney, and Stern’s. Sunrise Mall has more than 180 stores including Macy’s, Stern’s and JCPenney, and The Mall at the Source, anchored by Fortunoff, has Loehmann’s, Nordstrom Rack, Off 5th-Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet, ABC Home on the Road, and a Virgin Mega store, plus entertainment.
